CAN THO, VIETNAM - Two new cases of bird flu were discovered in Hau Giang Province yesterday, according to Nguyen Hien Trung, head of the provincial Animal Health Department.
With the detection of the two new outbreaks on Tuesday, three out of twelve provinces in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta have experienced outbreaks.
Virus infected poultry on both farms in Hau Giang were illegally raised and, subsequently, not vaccinated against the H5 virus.
Local animal health officials culled the flocks and sprayed chemicals in a 500-metre radius around the farms to disinfect the area of bird flu. Locals and authorities in Luong Tam and Xa Phien communes, where the farms were located, are now working to stem the disease's spread.
