India's food ministry has not proposed a ban on corn exports, despite trade fears that demand may exceed supply in the domestic market, a senior government official said.

'As far as we are concerned, we have not mooted such a proposal,' the official said.

Industry officials say that corn production is likely to be 12.75 million tonnes in the crop year between October 2006 and September 2007. Demand during this period is expected to be 14 million tonnes.

Indian firms, taking advantage of high world prices of the grain because of shrinking supplies, have exported corn for the first time in many years in the last two months.
