Seaside industrial park receives federal grant

A seaside industrial park in Shelburne, Nova Scotia has received a $500,000 federal grant, to help it prepare the site for commercial occupancy.

Integrated aquaculture company, Cooke Aquaculture Inc. has stated its plans to move a fish processing facility to the area, but there has still been no confirmation as to whether it will locate in the upgraded industrial park.

The grant handed out by Gail Shea, National Revenue Minister, will go to help the rural municipality transform 12 hectares in the local industrial park into ready-to-use lots for the marine-sector businesses. Roads, power, water and sewer services will all be extended to the new lots.

Cooke Aquaculture stated that they were working on bringing their farmed salmon production up to a level that would sustain a local production facility. More rearing pens, a new saltwater hatchery and a feed mill expansion are also on the plans for Nova Scotia.

Cooke’s saltwater production manager for Nova Scotia, Jeff Nickerson said, "Once all that takes place, the processing plant comes in and we’re looking toward the end of 2015 for that in eastern Shelburne County."
