A biogas plant fueling a local feed mill was won a national award at the 2013 Organics Recycling Awards.
Eco Sustainable Solutions' £3.3 million anaerobic digester (AD), which turns waste to energy won the AD Output category at the event.
Supplies from the biogas plant are powering the Mole Valley Farmers' Dorchester feed mill, which was the first feed mill in the UK to be powered completely by renewable energy.
The biogas plant, located in West Dorset, uses up to 15,000 tonnes of organic waste per annum in addition to 6,000 tonnes of pig slurry to create methane gas.
This gas is then use to produce up to 498 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity. By products from the bioenergy process are then used for agricultural fertiliser on local farms.
The annual Organics Recycling Award are organised by the Organics Recycling Group (ORG) which was formerly known as the Association for Organics Recycling and is now part of the Renewable Energy Association.
